Melasma is a common condition of the skin in which brown patches appear almost symmetrically over the face and sometimes the arms. It is a condition that is caused by a variety of factors including genetics, hormones, pregnancy, and is always exacerbated by sun exposure. The discoloration can vary from light to dark and can be very displeasing to the individual. Melasma is a common problem in darker skin types. It is seen frequently in Asian, African American, and Hispanic populations.

The key to managing melasma is life-long avoidance of sun exposure. Physical protection using shades, hats, and umbrellas, as well as protection with a high SPF, broad spectrum sunscreen are crucial to prevent further discoloration of the skin. Any lapse in sun protection may trigger melasma to return or worsen.

Melasma can be improved with a variety of methods including topical medications and laser treatments. Most of the time, multiple treatment sessions are necessary. Because of its highly reactive nature, melasma is one of the more challenging conditions to manage and should always be approached with caution, patience, and persistence.

At Wall Street Dermatology, we are experts in treatment of melasma.
