Traumatic Scar Treatment at Wall Street Dermatology

Traumatic scars are physical marks of healing after a serious injury. Everything from burns, scrapes, cuts, and penetration into the skin can cause traumatic scarring. Traumatic scars are often atrophic, indented,  or reddish brown discolorations of the skin. These specific scars are more reluctant to fade over time and need scar revision to improve in appearance.

Traumatic Scars We Treat

As mentioned above, one of the most common appearances of scars that result from an injury is a discolored and/or inverted scar. An atrophic scar is an indented or inverted scar that appears this way because deep scar tissue is binding the surface of the skin down.  These scars typically don’t naturally heal in a cosmetically acceptable way because the damaged tissue can’t regenerate in a way that can flatten the indentation. Traumatic scars also appear different from normal skin because of superficial differences in texture and color, which result from abnormal regeneration of superficial skin.

Our traumatic scar treatment helps the body produce more collagen to fill in the scar and/or improve the texture and color of the scar. Other treatments remove the scar tissue entirely.

Benefits of Traumatic Scar Treatment

Scars are daily reminders of the events that caused them. Traumatic scar treatment in NYC improves the appearance of unwanted physical reminders of past injuries. Additionally, you may dislike the way your scar creates an unbalanced appearance and texture. Regardless of what type of cosmetic treatment you choose, Dr. Tzu will help your traumatic scars fade for a smoother and clearer complexion.

Traumatic Scar Treatments

Traumatic scar treatments vary in invasiveness, technique, and the extent and type of results, so it’s important that you receive the cosmetic procedure that’s right for your specific scar.  At Wall Street Dermatology, we offer laser scar treatment, subcision, microneedling, and scar revision surgery. At your cosmetic consultation, Dr. Tzu will guide you through the right treatment option(s) for your particular traumatic scar.

Laser Scar Treatment

Laser scar treatment is often helpful to improve the red, purplish discoloration of scars. Pulsed dye lasers target red discoloration often found in younger scars, and can even stimulate collagen to be produced within a scar. It is helpful to treat traumatic scars earlier than later to improve the ultimate aesthetic outcome of a scar. Multiple sessions are required for optimum outcomes.

Microneedling

Microneedling utilizes precisely spaced and controlled micro punctures of the skin to stimulate collagen growth. This collagen fills in the scar tissue to reduce their appearance and smooth the skin’s texture and discoloration. The intensity of microneedling can be adjusted according to the severity of the scar and the location of the treatment area.  More aggressive microneedling sessions create deeper micro punctures of the skin for deeper regeneration. Multiple treatments are necessary for optimum outcomes.

Subcision

Scar subcision can be used to flatten an inverted or atrophic traumatic scar. This procedure utilizes a small sharp instrument, such as a needle, which is tunneled under scar tissue to break apart vertical strands of scar tissue that binds the surface of the skin down. Subcision creates a network of tunnels under the skin that releases the tethered-down surface tissue, so the surface of the skin can be lifted. During the procedure, a filler material consisting of hyaluronic acid can be simultaneously injected as a structural scaffold to support the newly elevated skin.  The skin eventually regenerates new collagen in the subcised area which slowly replaces the injected hyaluronic acid filler material for more permanent results. Subcision is a procedure that requires multiple treatment sessions.

Scar Revision Surgery

Scar revision surgery is ideal for the most severe traumatic scars. Dr. Tzu removes scar tissue and repositions the scar to reduce the appearance of your traumatic scar. While this cosmetic procedure will have its own surgical incision, the resulting scar will be less noticeable than the original traumatic scar.

Surgical scar revision is the more definitive procedure to reduce the appearance of severe traumatic scars, and the results are more dramatic per treatment session compared to noninvasive procedures such as lasers, microneedling, or subcision.  Multiple surgical sessions may be required depending on the size of the original traumatic scar. Additional treatments such as microneedling or laser treatments can also further reduce the appearance of the postsurgical scar if desired.

How Much Does Traumatic Scar Treatment in NYC Cost?

A typical traumatic scar treatment in NYC costs between $550-$3,00000. The range is due to variation in the type of scar treatment and size of the treatment area. A microneedling procedure can cost up to $1,000, while a laser scar treatment can go as low as $450 and as high as $2,000.
