How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella consists of deoxycholic acid, the same substance naturally secreted by our liver to digest dietary fat, to melt away unwanted fat deposits on certain areas of the body. The body then flushes out the broken-down fat tissue, and this is naturally and safely eliminated from the body.
At Wall Street Dermatology in NYC, we offer Kybella injections to quickly recontour common problem areas, including your chin, arms, thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. Once the excess fat is flushed from your body, you’ll get to enjoy a new, slimmer profile and silhouette.
Benefits of Kybella
There are many advantages to choosing Kybella over other forms of cosmetic fat removal, including:
- FDA-approved for removal of submental fat.
- Injections are completely non-invasive—no scalpels, cannulas, or surgical scars.
- Recontours your body quickly
- Procedure is fast—about 20 minutes
- Shorter recovery time than liposuction.
- Results are apparent in only one month.
For your comfort, we apply a topical anesthetic to numb the treated area and mitigate any discomfort from the injections.
What Areas of the Body Does Kybella Treat?
Though Kybella is only FDA-approved to treat fullness below the chin and around the neck, dermatologists consider it safe enough to use off-label in other parts of the body, as well.
These areas include:
- Back (eliminate “bra bulge”)
- Lower abdomen
- Lower buttocks
- Inner thighs
- “Love handles”
These softer areas of the body tend to retain fat cells, even after losing weight or building muscle. Kybella helps recontour these areas for a more streamlined, full-body silhouette.
Kybella Injections Before and After
Kybella Cost in NYC
The average cost of a Kybella treatment in NYC for the submental area range between $1,700 and $1,900. This price varies according to the surface area, volume of fat tissue, and body location of your treatments. For example, treatments for the arms are usually $2,000, while Kybella injections in the legs, buttocks, and abdomen may cost between $1700 and $3,200. Multiple sessions are needed, and patients may receive up to six sessions to achieve their best results. Additionally, Kybella injections are seen as a cosmetic procedure so they aren’t typically covered by health insurance.
During your procedure, the skin is first disinfected, carefully marked with grids, then numbed with topical and/or injectable anesthesia. Multiple injections of Kybella are then made in the treatment area. The process takes between 15 and 20 minutes and requires no in-office recovery time.
Though you can resume most daily activities right after your procedure, we recommend avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for up to 72 hours. Resting will help reduce swelling so you can enjoy your results sooner.
Is Kybella Permanent?
The deoxycholic acid in Kybella treatments permanently destroys the fat cells in the treatment area. The body then flushes the fat cells from your body as it would any other waste product. However, if you gain weight after your procedure, there is a small chance fat cells may reform in the treated area.
Kybella Injections Recovery Time
Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after receiving their Kybella treatments. However, we recommend that those with strenuous jobs or hobbies take several days off to help reduce swelling and bruising.
Swelling after receiving Kybella is normal and should subside within 4 weeks. However, you should contact your NYC dermatologist at Wall Street Dermatology if you experience the following:
- Persistent swelling beyond four weeks
- Signs of infection
- Problem swallowing (for under-chin injections)
Additionally, Kybella treatments are only appropriate for adults aged 18 or older who are not nursing or pregnant.
Kybella vs. CoolSculpting
Kybella injections and CoolSculpting are both non-invasive procedures that permanently destroy fat cells in certain areas of the body. Both procedures also produce final results in about 90 days.
However, Kybella uses injections, while CoolSculpting uses ultra-low temperatures to freeze away fat cells. This process is called cryolipolysis, which takes about 45 minutes compared to Kybella’s injection time of 20 minutes.
A rare side effect known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a condition whereby more fat is unexpectedly created from a fat-reducing procedure, has also been reported with Coolsculpting but not with Kybella.
Additionally, CoolSculpting can cost up to $4,000 in NYC—about $600 more than the most expensive Kybella treatment.

Kybella Injection FAQ
Good candidates for Kybella treatments include adults over 18 who are in good overall health and not currently pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients must not have loose, sagging skin at baseline to prevent further loosening of skin after the fat is removed.
It’s safe to receive Kybella treatments once every four weeks, and each patient may safely get up to six total injections.
Jowling related to excess submental fat under the chin can be treated with Kybella. However, if jowling is due to sagging skin, other treatments may be more suitable.
Swelling associated with Kybella treatments should continuously diminish and completely disappear within four weeks. If your swelling lasts longer than this, contact your dermatologist at Wall Street Dermatology for a follow-up appointment.
No, Kybella doesn’t tighten skin—it dissolves fat cells beneath the skin. To help firm and tighten your skin, we recommend pairing Kybella with treatments like microneedling.
